APPLETON, WI (September 15, 2025) – Direct thermal labeling is a trusted solution across industries for its simplicity, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness – no inks, low energy use, and a single consumable make it a smart choice. While outdoor durability has historically been a challenge, Appvion is redefining what direct thermal can do with PolyTherm® Extend, a patent-pending solution that delivers up to one year of outdoor image life. This innovation preserves all the convenience of traditional direct thermal systems while significantly enhancing environmental durability.
To demonstrate the performance of PolyTherm® Extend, Appvion conducted a light fastness experiment using a Q-SUN xenon arc test chamber. This chamber simulates the effects of full-spectrum sunlight and temperature over time. Both a standard biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) direct thermal label and PolyTherm® Extend were exposed for 200 consecutive hours – equivalent to roughly one year of outdoor light exposure.
The results were striking. The control label became illegible after just 24 hours, while PolyTherm® Extend remained clearly readable and scannable even after nearly 200 hours. This marks a significant leap forward in lightfastness for direct thermal technology.
PolyTherm® Extend is designed as a true drop-in solution. Customers can expect the familiar white background and crisp black image, while converters will find compatibility with overprint varnishes, inks, and adhesives consistent with other PolyTherm® grades.
